Image of Reward Notice

Reward Notice

  • Printed public notice
  • Ambler, Printer, Preston
  • September 1880
  • 305 x 223mm (12 x 8¾in)

This example of a neighbourhood public notice is not just offering a one pound reward to the finder of a lady's long gold guard but also issues a threat or warning to the person found in possession of the item if it is not swiftly returned to the Head Constable.

Ambler of Preston is the local jobbing printer, his layout and typography conveys the message forcefully and briefly, the large bold type transmits the story instantly, whereas the subsidiary paragraphs can be read in detail once the viewers interest is engaged. Manuscript on the reverse indicates 50 copies were produced.
